American Prospects #4

There is a cold that is so cold, the air is frozen, and nothing works. the machinery fails. the tools to fix the machines dont work  wither, and even if they could work the finger dexterity needed to operate them would be non existent. in this level of coldness you can see through the limits of technology. all those manuals of electric boards that limit the operating temperatures to a range between -10 and 50 degrees C suddenly have meaning. the steel shrinks and buckles under the strain of the pressure caused by the cold, otherwise flexible nylon materials loose their elasticity, electronic circuits loose their conductivity.
technology has a limit. the cold that is cold enough to stop everything can be even colder.
