Here is how i re finished a dinky old table someone had thrown out, and then lived in our open second floor porch for 4 years. We love it so much i had to do it.

 Before

 Apart and sanded down to 400 grit.

 Stain and first coat of poly.

 Base drying

 Second coat of poly.

 4th and final coat.

 Back together

SS screws make all the difference.
